Jadakiss primed and ready to go! |
Yesterday and today I've made some good progress on my NaMoPaiMo model, Jadakiss, and have been trying to make sure I take a photo after every coat of paint. This won't really be a tutorial, but I will be trying to explain what I'm doing as I go along and hopefully you'll be able to get a better idea of my painting process. My techniques aren't really the most efficient, but I like going back and forth with darker and lighter layers of paint since I think the color ends up having a lot more depth in the end.

Coat 1 |
For the first coat I used a pale gray-brown, made from a mixture of Golden titanium white and Vallejo chocolate brown and sky gray.
|
Coat 2 |
Next I went back over with a mixture of titanium white with a little bit of interference gold, focusing on the highlight areas.
|
Coat 3 |
Now I added some pinking. I used a number of colors in this mixture, but it was mostly titanium white and Van Dyke red.
|
Coat 4 |
Then I used a pale, cool brown, concentrating on the more shaded areas. This mixture used titanium white, sky gray, Van Dyke brown, interference gold, interference orange, interference blue, and possibly some others. This picture is the closest out of this set to the color I want the model to be when finished.

Coat 5 |
Next I used a quite metallic mixture of Vallejo's brass with a number of other colors to make a dark golden color, which I applied mostly to the points.
|
Coat 6 |
Then I used a darker grayish brown that included quite a bit of Van Dyke brown along with some interference colors to add a lot of contrasty shading. Right now this horse has a lot more smoky than cream going on, but don't worry, he's not going to stay that way!
Next I'll be adding dapples with pigments (I don't think my airbrush is really good enough to produce dapples that are as nice as I want.) Then I'll go back to the airbrush to blend everything together before moving into the detailing phase.
