Truffle Artist's Proof #1 - Dapple Bay

Truffle Artist's Proof #1

For the first artist proof, I decided to go with a dappled mealy bay with a blaze and near hind sock. This horse was done almost entirely in acrylics, with loads of hand painted detailing over an airbrushed basecoat. I also used just a little bit of colored pencil on some areas like his hooves and muzzle, and the whole piece was sealed with multiple layers of dullcote with acrylic gloss varnish on the eyes and insides of the nostrils. I experimented with some new painting techniques, and was really pleased with how this horse turned out.

Not your ordinary bay, this guy's coat is packed with all sorts of tonal variation. Even his mane and tail are shaded with tones of brown and blue. His removable resin base with a suede bottom was finished with static grass and several tiny stones over a base layer of sand and flocking. He is signed 'HLT '17, AP #1' on his belly.

All of the pictures on this page were taken outside with a Canon 7D and Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM lens. The picture at the top of the page was taken on a slightly overcast day, the first 10 pictures below were taken on a heavily overcast day, and the last 6 pictures were taken in full sunlight.
